Online Support Sessions -What are the benefits

  • You can access online counselling from the comfort of your own home if you have a reliable internet connection.

  • It is especially beneficial if you can't leave your home easily, or can't find a local counsellor to work with.

  • Online counselling is cheaper than face-to-face counselling as there are less costs involved.

  • No travel is required.

  • Online counselling can be accessed from anywhere, even if you are not at home.

  • There is no need for scheduling the support offered to you via email.

  • It is private and confidential and might feel less intense, intrusive or stressful than face to face counselling.

  • It is still accessible if you are a parent and find it difficult to get childcare.

  • It might be more successful for those feeling at ease with the written word.

  • You may find the process of writing down the things that are on your mind very helpful in itself, and the act of sharing can provide some relief.

  • You may find that writing in comfortable and familiar surroundings reduces your inhibitions, allowing you to be more open than you might be face-to-face.

Types of Online support

Email counselling session are a series of email exchanges between us. We will agree a set time frame in which emails are sent and responded to. I suggest a guideline of up to 50 minutes writing each email and that the email is no longer than 750-900 words. This way we can ensure that our email exchanges mimic the process of face to face counselling as much as possible. I will in turn spend up to 50 minutes reading your email and composing my reply to you. I ask that you send your messages via a fully encrypted secure web-mail services such as hushmail. Alternatively, we can send password protected word documents.

For video counselling, I use either Skype. In order to use this type of online counselling, your computer must have a webcam and microphone so that we can both see and hear each other. Together we will plan a suitable time for us to meet. Before your first session you may want to ensure you are alone and won't be disturbed. It is also a good idea to make yourself comfortable and check you have good Internet connection before you start.

Instant messaging counselling (also called instant chat counselling) is carried out at a pre-arranged time using an instant messenger application.

I use Skype (which will be secure and confidential), so that we exchange instant messages for the length of the session.

For voice call counselling, I use either Skype or Telephone. In order to use this type of online counselling, your computer must have a microphone and we will both be able to hear each other. Together we will plan a suitable time for us to meet. Before your first session you may want to ensure you are alone and won't be disturbed. It is also a good idea to make yourself comfortable and check you have good Internet connection or Phone signal before you start.

Online Security

Click on the Skype button below to download Skype for instant messaging and video counselling

Skype is free to download and is a secure application that uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Data is stored on Microsoft servers for a short period however (even if deleted off users’ machines) and this could potentially cause a small risk.

There is no guarantee that online counselling is 100% safe, but provided care and consideration is used, the risk that a third party can hack in to the communication is minimal.

Maintaining the privacy of your online exchange

I ask that clients ensure they secure their computer and emails against unauthorised viewing by third parties. This may include adopting the use of password protection for all personal email accounts and documents etc. I also recommend that a client does not engage in online counselling using a public computer, or use a computer in a public place, where the content of exchanges could be viewed by others in the close proximity.

Referrals

During the course of online counselling, it may become clear that a different type of counselling approach or support would be more suitable for you. In this case it would be appropriate to refer you to alternative services or other healthcare professionals. This will be discussed with you at the time.

About the way I work online

I will provide, to the best of my ability, online counselling opportunities that endeavor to create a supportive, non-judgmental response in which you will be given time and space to reflect.

This process can foster growth and lead to positive changes.
